Whether you have recently relocated to a new country or a new town, a new location means new ways of expressing family traditions. Are you used to your kids making Valentine cards for all the class? And no one does this in your new location? What about dinner out just for you and your husband? With currency exchange rates, not to mention not knowing where to go; let me suggest something totally different for celebrating Valentine's Day.
This February give yourselves the best Valentine's present ever! Instead of a "twice the usual price dinner", let me suggest two ways of investing in the gift of time and engagement to express your love:
Number One: list your "couple priorities", so that all decisions for travel or celebrations or working are straightforward throughout the year; no matter where you live. Share them with the children. Post them on your new fridge to remind the whole family that no matter where you live- these are the priorities. These are ours:
2. Our marriage
3. Our family
4. Our ministries
5. Our church
Number Two: develop a vision for your marriage at this stage of your lives, particular to your new location. In other words, why is it that God brought you together? Why did He bring you here? When you spend time praying and reading Scripture and seek His plans, He does reveal! A vision board displaying your goals and priorities is a great reminder wherever you call home. You can create yours with the whole family; what a wonderful opportunity to share memories and stories!
One day when back in my home country (in Florida), I was caught quite by surprise while I spending a few minutes in an antique shop (ha! junk shop). There was a very large print of a painting that made me stop in my tracks. I just knew the Holy Spirit was speaking to my spirit. I knew My Father was revealing to me His plan for my life and that of my family. God revealed this same vision in other ways to my husband, but we had a wonderful opportunity to have a painting made by a great artist friend who brought the theme to life. She listened to the Holy Spirit as she painted for us, bringing colour and even a new perspective to the vision that sent a "Yes!" deep into our hearts. This painting is up on our wall.....wherever we live.
It may look like a painting of a table with empty chairs, but anyone who lives a long way from home will know what I mean when I say, "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could all be together!"
We can spend time wishing we were somewhere else, or could head to that favourite restaurant this Valentine's day; but I challenge you to invest in your marriage and your family wherever you are!
I challenge you to invest.
Everyone invited to dinner! This is our vision for family life-not empty chairs but everyone coming to dinner and about to sit down for a great meal and a long, long catch up! Still, on Valentine's Day? Maybe just the two of us.
