Helping Expats Relocate
Who would have thought this city girl would have loved looking after chickens? My husband just laughed. He couldn't believe it. I've even named them. The red roosters are all "Henrietta," and the grey roosters are "Roberto." Do not confuse me with gender. Please also understand that I am not about to own any chickens, as we travel far too often to get into ownership of animals of any sort. They belong to our neighbours and I had to go for neighbourly "chicken training," just to learn how to feed them, turn off/on the electric fencing and make sure that in this unusual-for-England heat they had plenty of water. What a surprise, loving talking to chickens and gathering eggs every morning.
Way back in January I took part in an iBloom exercise of planning a Vision Board for 2018. I led the women I am mentoring to make their own boards. It's not about moods. Its about taking time to pray and consider and make a visual aid for what we think/hope/pray is God's leading the way for the year ahead. It gets us listening to Him and seeking His will. Apparently His will can be full of surprises. Mine certainly did not feature chickens!
Having a Vision Board isn't the same thing as detailed planning ahead. It's about getting the big picture of how we want to invest in our lives. We leave margins for surprises, or unforeseen events, and we every once in awhile enjoy something that just isn't "planned". August is a great month for doing the unexpected whether on holiday/vacation or having a ly-down in the garden. And we could use a little of that time for a Summer Reflection, where we could consider how we are doing with our Quiet Time, or investing in our marriage or children or grandchildren and even friends. What were those other plans we had for the year?
Unexpectedly, I had a some time to myself this morning, and chose to do my own Summer Reflection.
Result: I realise that one plan working out well for me is having a financial planner. My particular financial planner helps me develop a plan for spending and saving for expected and unexpected events in the year ahead and beyond. There are quite a few financial coaches with big names and big businesses but I wanted something smaller and more personal. I wanted someone who wasn't going to try to sell me stuff all the time. And who understood British/American currency. Thankfully, once again through iBloom connections I found Maegen Connors of Wealth Your Way, who has great expertise and experience as well as a sense of fun- and at a reasonable cost. She's based in Florida so Maegen and I skype monthly and then email almost every week. I love her encouragement and gentle listening. So Maegen, when you read this please know that while I am loving getting to know and feeding the neighbours chickens, they will not be on the shopping list in the months ahead!
Summer bargain: if you would like a copy of either Parents on the Move! or Beyond Broken Families please check the shop page on this website. For the month of August, I am offering free postage.
Verse for all you who are moving to a new location: Psalm 37: 3 Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Have a great August- full of surprises and a little time for reflection,
