It's more than likely if you are about to relocate to another country, or simply (ha!) move to another area within the country you are now living, you will want to arrange a "last coffee" with a friend or two. Yeah, if you keep it to coffee you are doing great.
However, I never found it that simple. When the kids were school age and we were moving from England to the USA, we had our last fish and chips, last local pizza and our son's favourite crisps/potato chips.
Then, when we moved back to the UK from the USA we had our last local pizza, last pretzel bag, last Bryers ice cream. I was secretly glad, as I ate from the last bag of Doritos, that I would be putting 5,000 miles between me and that addiction.
I seemed to gain five pounds with every move.
So, folks it has caught up with me! I still remember the day when on one move to England, I saw something else that caught up with me- Cool Ranch Doritos. I was standing in the middle of the aisle at Tesco's and quite audibly sighed, "Oh no. Cool Ranch is here."
And of course, I ridiculously took three bags home to the family.
While there are food items that can only be had in certain countries, such as beautiful olives straight from the tree in Italy and local cheese and wine; for the most part, we can get (at a price) whatever we want wherever we search hard enough.
So, it's time to consider how to make a move without gaining extra weight-baggage.
1. Have a family pow-wow and plan your meals for the last week before the moving vans arrive. This may not be the last week you are in the country. You may live off hotel food for a little while, so we are talking about home meals here. When you plan what you are eating you can more easily select healthy meals and compensate for over indulgence.
2. Let exercise be part of your last days in the country (and part of exploring your new location). Plan walks to places that have meant something to you. If you have had a walking-partner, take a last walk and perhaps last coffee, rather than a pizza blowout. Remeber to download a good exercise site such as Faithful Workouts. Make sure you have an accountability partner that you can WhatsApp while travelling. Show her your exercise plan!
3. Take time to get into your Bible reading. This is no time to say there is no time for digging into the Word. Bible for Food Recovery has an excellent reading program, and you can remember the comforting words "Lead me not into temptation," rather than leading yourself to comfort food. One of the best tips I have had from my accountability partner is, "Do not mention any particular food item. Do not say "the D-word!"
